Professional vs DIY Permanent Lighting in San Antonio: The Ownership Timeline

Full disclosure, because it changes how you should read this: I own the TruLight dealership serving San Antonio. I make money when someone chooses a professional install, and specifically when they choose mine. That is a real bias and I am not going to hide it behind a neutral tone. Every competitor detail below is attributed to the manufacturer's own published page so you can check it rather than trust me.

None of this is a claim that do-it-yourself permanent lighting is uniformly bad, or that all DIY products are built alike. Some are engineered carefully. Product against product in the abstract is the easy comparison. The more useful comparison is who handles measuring, installation, service, and future roof work. One published DIY example, and the limits of it

Govee's RGBICWW LED Permanent Outdoor Lights is one concrete product with a current U.S. product page. That page describes a do-it-yourself installation and a fixture that produces both color and white output.

I am deliberately not restating an operating temperature range, a rated life in hours, an ingress rating for the adapter, a coverage maximum, or a warranty length here, because I could not confirm those figures on the current U.S. page for this product. If any of them would change your decision, read the page yourself and ask Govee to confirm the figure in writing for the exact model you intend to buy.

What is published there describes one Govee product. It does not describe DIY permanent lighting as a category. Do not let anyone, including me, tell you that DIY products as a group use adhesive mounting, lack a track, cannot be serviced, or fail in South Texas heat. Pull up the exact model you are considering and read the current written specification and warranty on the manufacturer's own site.

What I publish about my own product

Here is what TruLight publishes: a 48V low voltage system, six LEDs per RGBW node consisting of three RGB plus three dedicated warm white, a published 100,000-hour light rating, and a professionally installed color-matched aluminum track. Current warranty terms are at /warranty.

Voltage is the most abused spec in this industry, so let me be careful with that number. It alone does not tell you that a system is safer, runs farther, is brighter, needs fewer power injection points, is more efficient, is better built, or is code compliant. Those outcomes depend on the complete listed or specified system and on how the install is designed for the specific house. I mention 48V because it is a published fact about our system, not because it settles anything.

The ownership timeline

Follow the calendar for a minute instead of the product. The installation and later service stages deserve the closest look.

Phase one: scope and design, before anything is bought

Someone has to decide which elevations get lit, how many linear feet that is, where the track starts and stops, and where the supply and controller live. On a DIY purchase you do all of that, and if the estimate is short you find out with a partially lit house and a reorder. On a professional install that scope is measured and written down before an order is placed.

Around San Antonio this is the step where scope gets underestimated. If your house has multi-plane elevations, stepped gables, a turret or bay feature, or deep overhangs, the footage is spread across several separate runs rather than one clean edge. A published coverage maximum on any product page describes what that product supports, not whether your elevation set fits inside one kit. Measure first.

Phase two: install day, and what your roof is made of

Install day is where an effort estimate gets tested. The mounting plan is one decision repeated along every foot of the run, and the right answer changes with what you are fastening to. Tile roofs create edge conditions a flat fascia does not, including the transition where tile meets fascia, the varying reveal, and the risk of cracking a piece you never meant to touch. Two or three stories up, on pitch, access stops being theoretical.

The daytime question deserves the same weight as the nighttime one. Limestone and stucco elevations are bright and reflective in direct sun, and San Antonio gets a lot of direct sun. Whatever runs along your fascia is visible at noon on a Tuesday as well as after dark. Our answer is a color-matched aluminum track designed into the line of the elevation; other products answer it differently. Either way, look at the actual product in daylight on a real house before you commit, because a nighttime photo tells you nothing about how it reads the rest of the day.

Phases three and four: living with it, then fixing it

Day to day this is mostly the app and the controller. The account is yours either way, and either way it inherits whatever the manufacturer decides to do with that app later. The difference is who you call when the system behaves in a way the help article does not cover. Enclosure ratings are worth reading on whatever product you are considering, and the lights, the control box and the power adapter are often rated differently, so check each one on the manufacturer's current page. Then there is the phase nobody plans for. Something fails, or the roof gets replaced, or a soffit gets repaired, and the question becomes who takes the system off and puts it back: you, at whatever height the problem happens to be, or a scheduled service visit.

A short list of things worth verifying

  • The exact model number and the manufacturer's current published rating, operating range, ingress protection and maximum supported run.
  • The written warranty: duration, what is covered, what is excluded, and what voids it.
  • Whether the mounting method suits tile, your specific fascia detail and your overhang depth.
  • Where the controller enclosure will live and what it is rated for.
  • What happens in year five when one node fails at the highest point of the elevation.
  • Whether any HOA or architectural review requirement applies to permanently mounted exterior fixtures on your property.
  • A realistic count of your own hours, install plus service, over the life of the system.

Some homeowners run that list and land on DIY. That can be right, particularly on a single-story home with straightforward access and an owner who enjoys the project. I am not arguing that DIY is always wrong. I am arguing that the install and the years after it carry more of the outcome than the spec sheet does, and that picking either option by default is the expensive way to decide.
